Service Tax was the earlier indirect tax regime applicable to taxable services. With implementation of GST, Service Tax was subsumed into the GST framework from 1 July 2017.

Earlier Service Tax

Before GST, Service Tax was levied on specified taxable services under the Finance Act, 1994 and related rules.

Transition to GST

From 1 July 2017, Service Tax was subsumed into the GST system. Existing taxpayers were required to transition into the GST regime as applicable.

Legacy Compliance

Frequently Asked Questions

Service Tax Registration FAQs

Common questions regarding Service Tax and its transition to GST.

Is Service Tax registration still available?
Service Tax was subsumed into GST from 1 July 2017. Therefore, a new business providing taxable services today generally needs to consider GST registration rather than a new Service Tax registration, subject to applicable law.
What happened to old Service Tax registrations?
Existing Service Tax taxpayers were transitioned into the GST framework as applicable. Historical Service Tax records, liabilities, returns and departmental proceedings may still require attention.
Can I get a Service Tax number today?
For current taxable services, the relevant registration framework is generally GST. If your requirement concerns a historical Service Tax matter, we can review the facts and guide you on the appropriate procedure.
I received an old Service Tax notice. Can Legal Chalo help?
Yes. We can review the notice, relevant historical records and available documents and explain the possible compliance or representation requirements.
I have unpaid Service Tax from before GST. What should I do?
Historical Service Tax dues should be reviewed based on the relevant period, records, orders and applicable provisions. Contact us before making any payment so that the matter can be assessed appropriately.
I run a service business today. Which registration do I need?
Current service businesses generally fall under GST rather than Service Tax. GST registration depends on the nature, location and other facts of the business and applicable GST provisions.
Is Service Tax and GST the same?
No. They are different tax regimes. Service Tax was the earlier tax on specified services, while GST is the current indirect tax framework covering supplies of goods and services subject to the applicable provisions.
Can Legal Chalo help with GST registration instead?
Yes. If your requirement is for a current service business, Legal Chalo can assist with applicable GST registration and related compliance.
