ISO 45001 Standard

ISO 45001 Standard

Implementing the ISO 45001 standard can help your organization demonstrate compliance with health and safety regulations. In some aspects, however, it goes beyond what the law requires, so think carefully about whether to accept it. If your organization already has an ISO program in place or is familiar with other performance standards, you may find it easier to adopt the ISO 45001 standard. However, if your organization is small, which is not a strategic plan appropriately, you can find it difficult to:

  • Explain what the standard requires.
  • Consider the nature of the formal application.

What is the ISO 45001 Standard?

The ISO 45001 standard is an international standard for occupational health and safety developed by national and international standards committees’ independent of government.

This is especially likely if you are adopting performance standards to meet the supply chain needs of customers or contracting companies.

It’s important to think about:

  • Effective implementation of the standards, including accountability and certification.
  • that it can easily be tailored to work best for the size and complexity of your organization according to the risks you control.

Contracting companies and customers should therefore ask themselves whether the supplier really needs 45001 certification or if they can demonstrate competence in health and ISO safety standards using alternative methods.

Your organization can use the standard in your operations (in whole or in part) to help provide evidence of good ISO health and safety standard practices without certification. However, you can only claim compliance with a standard when it has been fully implemented.

Audit of the ISO 45001 standard:

In order to apply the ISO 45001 standard appropriately, auditors or certifiers must understand that it must:

  • commensurate with the size and complexity of the organization.
  • according to the risks.

You should ensure that any auditors or certifiers you use are certified to a recognized standard, such as relevant parts of the ISO 19011:2011 or ISO 17021:2011 series.

The certification body must be accredited for ISO 45001 by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) or an equivalent body.

What is an occupational health and safety policy?

Occupational health and safety management, commonly referred to as OH&SMS, describes the process by which an organization manages the occupational health and safety of its employees It represents a set of laws, policies, procedures, and practices to prevent occupational health and safety risks. It must be appropriate for regulatory ISO 45001 requirements, occupational health and safety risks, and operating procedures. The ISO standard represents best practice in establishing, implementing, and maintaining an OH&SMS. Its requirements and guidelines help an organization establish an effective OH&SMS and help avoid critical resources being lost in the process.

The ISO 45001 standard provides some insight into documentation requirements.
